Colors play such a hidden, yet intricate, role in healthcare – from the color of the walls to the medical furniture.
October brings to mind the brisk weather, changing fall colors, and (for many) pumpkin spice lattes. There we said it, Starbucks fans; now back to the color part. Here are three colorful and somewhat spooky secrets about healthcare you probably didn’t know.
1.) Why are scrubs mostly green and blue? In the past, white was popular in healthcare for the symbolization of cleanliness. However, green and blue grew in popularity and became known as “healing hues” or colors that evoke feelings of tranquility, peace, and health.
2.) Look around rehabilitative hospitals. There’s a great chance that hues of yellow are sprinkled in the healthcare furniture and on walls. As a center for many patients with depression, yellow is known as one of the most energizing and “happy” colors.
3.) Outside the realm of hospital furniture, have you ever wondered why pills are certain colors? The truth is that a pill’s color is meant to respond to the anticipated results of the medication. For example, sleeping pills are usually blue while speedy recovery medication is typically red. Although we don’t exactly “taste” pills, could you imagine stomaching a grey or brown pill? Doesn’t sound very tasty.
4.) This trend of “healing hues” has also trickled into healthcare furnishings. As waiting rooms are inevitably areas of stress, and wondering, you will certainly find these hues on healthcare chairs or wall art. Many never consider the stress doctors experience in hospitals every day. Healing hues are often used in doctor office furniture as well; they need a little color therapy too!
Although all facilities may not abide under these theories, begin taking a closer look at hospital room furniture and even the colors of nurses’ scrubs. You may be tickled pink by your observations!
