I joined OstermanCron as their accounting manager in 1997 two months after Joel & Keith founded the company. I love accounting! No matter what, debits always equal credits. I worked for them for 8 years. They had established a great culture and I loved working there.
However, both my husband and I began to get restless. We were at the stage in our lives where we wanted something more, a purpose. Our boys, out of college now, were doing amazing things! So, why couldn’t we? World peace seemed a little overwhelming, as was opening a school in Africa or Tibet. Instead, we decided on more modest goals. My husband would teach engineering at the college level, and for me, health and wellness was very important so I became a yoga teacher. We sold our house and opted for a condo in Florida. After all, you might as well be warm pursuing your purpose in life! And so, we did just that!
What we didn’t count on was grandchildren who lived in Michigan and North Carolina. So, after 6 years in Florida, we moved back to Cincinnati. We reconnected with our former employers and began a different phase of our lives. I was back part time doing some accounting work for OstermanCron with an occasional yoga class on the side; my husband doing engineering. Although I was both happy and busy at the beloved Cincinnati office furniture dealer, there were times when I quieted my mind which often asked me, “I thought you were interested in health and wellness?”
Two years ago, I was asked to temporarily do project manager work for a long time customer. Project Managers are awesome at OstermanCron! They handle multiple customers, multiple projects all with grace and ease. They read drawings, place and track orders, arrange installs, etc. They are the glue that makes everything work! But, I was assured that my duties would be more along the order of Project Manager Lite: One customer, no drawings, standard products, and great written procedures. So accepting the challenge, I promised myself to try to be flexible (yoga joke!).
I always tell my yoga students to become aware of what their body and mind is telling them. So, I took my own advice. I realized I was helping people with their health and wellness. Enabling people to sit in an ergonomic office chair and use an articulating keyboard tray, direct task lighting, and variable height office desk work surfaces is contributing to the health and well-being of others. So, because of my contribution, the owners and users of our office furniture products can be more productive, go home a little less tired, and even want to work out- maybe even join a yoga class!
