Remember when you were growing up and your dad or granddad had a chair that was “their chair”? It was a piece of furniture that, at least for my father, was used to escape for an hour or so after the work day; or be surrounded by the family he so enjoyed engaging with at family events. That one piece of furniture was iconic to him and a special piece of my memories of him. I remember sitting in it when he was out of the room. I’m sure it felt quite larger back then than it would now, but I know I felt larger than life in it. It was something personal to both he and my family because the chair was an extension of who he was, even though that sounds a bit silly thinking about it now. But, that type of feeling is at home, right? Surely there’s nothing you could feel that personally connected to in your office design or your office furniture.
For a moment, imagine a meeting space in your office that your customers can’t stop talking about. Something that speaks to a memory of your meeting, party, or other engagement and makes them want to return. Something that makes recruiting new and talented people easy as they become so comfortable within the space because it exudes your company culture and values. Think of a space where your meetings are less of a headache due to seamless technology integration or experiencing less headaches because you decided to go with ergonomic office chairs.
Let’s start to think about our spaces in this way. Let’s look at how we can make small investments now that will work to make our team members more effective and relaxed in their space. It breeds function, simplicity, and a level of comfort that makes a day at the office feel like reclining in your favorite chair. Let’s make office furniture personal.
