Stretches Straight From Your Chair

Let me guess… You’re reading this blog while sitting. In fact, you’ve probably been sitting all day, right? While we can’t change the fact that office jobs require a lot of sitting, we can help you stay comfortable while doing so.

Do you ever have one of those days where you do not realize how long you were sitting until you stand up and realize how tense your body is? While the importance of ergonomics is vital, there are also practices that will allow you to stretch straight from your chair.

Fitness Magazine shared different yoga poses that will leave you feeling refreshed and your muscles will stay less tense. Take less than five minutes out of your busy work hour and commit to trying these out for yourself.

First, the Seated Chest Lift. This will allow you to open your chest while stretching your back at the same time.

  • Sit on the edge of your chair, feet flat, with both hands behind you.
  • Grip the seat with fingers pointing away.
  • Breathe in, lifting your chest; exhale and release your hands.
  • Repeat

Now that your back feels less tense, let’s focus on your shoulders and next. The Neck Opener helps relieve tension from the way you were sitting while staring at your computer screen.

  • Sit up straight at the edge of your chair with your feet flat on the floor.
  • Reach your left arm behind your back, then grab your left wrist with your right hand and lightly pull to the right side.
  • While holding your wrist, slowly rotate your neck from the right side to back and up finally to forward and down.
  • Repeat for 30 seconds and switch sides.

And last but not least, we can’t forget about the tension in your spine and lower back. Let’s try the Seated Twist.

  • Sit on the edge of your chair with feet on the floor.
  • Place your right hand on your left knee and grab the chair back with your left hand.
  • Gently twist toward the chair and hold for a few breaths.
  • Return to center and switch sides

The best thing about these stretches and poses is that it is all from your chair. Whether you are on a conference call or taking a minute to look away from your computer monitor, these are great times to stretch and relieve tension from your body.
