“Just when we thought the plague was over, here comes the swarm of cicadas!” Stated as a joke during one of our social media planning meetings, we realized- its not wrong! Just as the CDC has updated its guidelines and COVID related restrictions are lessening, you may have been looking forward to some sense of normalcy again. But if you’re squeamish when it comes to bugs you may want to re-think that plan. The weather is warming up, so the Brood X cicadas have begun emerging, and will be serenading us for the next 4-6 weeks.
If red-eyed, flying bugs don’t get you excited, you may not be looking forward to spending much time outdoors during this time. Luckily if you need some protection during your outdoor activities, you can purchase a “Walking Mesh Pod” for about $90. While it may look like something from a futuristic movie, this mesh-screen “bubble” will protect you while mowing your lawn or taking a stroll around the neighborhood. Check out this online article, released in April from CityBeat for details.
Whether you opt to venture out or hide indoors, just make sure you let the cicadas be, and don’t use pesticides or other insect-killers. While it may be tempting, most of them will not work on cicadas, and you will likely do more harm than good as cicadas are a tasty treat for birds, wildlife, your family dog, and even people. Yes, you read that correctly; we don’t know who they are, but apparently people eat cicadas.
In a recent copy of The Enquirer, an article offers several recipes for those brave souls who want to try this protein-rich delicacy. A quick Google search for “Cicada Recipes” will provide you with a variety of options for pizza, salad, cookies, and even a cocktail to name a few. Although, upon further inspection we were equally disappointed and excited to learn that last one doesn’t actually have any cicadas in it. Cheers!
Whatever your stance, the cicadas are coming. Luckily its just a short visit, and then they will disappear for another 17 years or so. In the meantime, might we recommend curling up with a good book on your favorite piece of commercial lounge furniture? If you need some suggestions give us a call, and we’ll walk though some quick-ship options so you an enjoy some cicada-free peace in comfort.
